Blackpool finals. I can actually see the dancers dancing with the music. While still a little over the top for my tastes -I prefer street style - I quite enjoyed it and added it to my list of videos to keep.

Suggestions for ballroom dance venues Chicago downtown and north (?) suburbs?

Dance Forums - Fri, 08/24/2012 - 7:08am
Hey fellow DFers!

I'm going to be in the Chicago area for a week and a half, first a convention downtown, then staying in Deerfield, IL as a base for some touristing in the Chicago area, so was wondering if anyone had suggestions for ballroom venues. I do American style but have found out that unless I stray into Jive I can hold my own in International or mixed venues. Just thought it might be fun to spend a night or two with a different dance crowd while travelling.

I will have to rely on public transit while downtown but will have access to a vehicle when I am in Deerfield.

Any suggestion welcome!

Hi everyone! I am knew here. I am not a professional dancer but use dance for fitness. I have done some Dance fitness DVDs and I am always looking to improve the content. Mostly DVD series like the hustle is mostly hip hop and Latin. We have fun doing it. What I have noticed is how fit ballroom dancers are. Amazing! Is there any certain moves or routines that dancers use to stay so fit during practice sessions? Something that is fun?:D

Attending group classes even though not "technically" qualified

Dance Forums - Fri, 08/24/2012 - 12:02am
Throughout the week, my studio has standalone group classes open to students who've reached the specified minimum syllabus level (e.g. B2, B3-4, S1, etc.), and I was wondering if I, after 2+ years at the studios and regularly attending the "open" group classes (which precede the social parties), I should be OK to attend the B2 classes, even for styles not in my program?

I'm afraid to broach the subject w/ my teacher for fear of her saying no, even though I know that other students of hers do attend classes technically outside of their levels, and once, when my teacher's back was turned around, some other teachers pulled me into THEIR group class.

(And let me preëmptively add that this issue aside, my teacher is awesome.)

First Coast Classic

Did anyone go to this one in the past?

I am specifically interested in how big it is for smooth and standard, and if there is an alternative airport to fly into (which hopefully would have more direct flights).

Large Chest and Latin costumes

Dance Forums - Wed, 08/22/2012 - 5:27pm
Hello! I am brand new to this forum; I wanted to know if there were suitable latin dresses for women with larger chests. I'm a 34 DD (going on D since I'm slowly losing weight). Are there sexy backless dresses I could wear like the beautiful ones you see competitors wear?

I also wanted to know if there are dresses out there with flesh clored straps to match my skin tone (milk chocolate :p)

Forum Software Upgrade in the Works

Dance Forums - Wed, 08/22/2012 - 5:16pm
Hello everyone,

We probably won't be rushing this, but the forum software we are running from vBulletin is getting increasingly outdated, and we are going to be making some changes soon, likely switching from vBulletin to Xenforo.

Xenforo is very similar to vbulletin (but much better) and was created by many of the original developers of vbulletin. They "jumped ship" when the ownership of vbulletin changed. In my dealings with vbulletin in the last year, I have not been very pleased, but quite the opposite for xenforo. You can see it running now on Salsa Forums.

It will surely take a little getting used to for both the members and moderators (who will get an early preview), but it has been our experience that Salsa Forums is almost twice as busy as before the switch, and the moderators have much easier tools to use too that coordinate well with user reports, etc. We did a little spam on salsa forums initially, but we installed some anti-spam tools and it is much better now (using the same tools as here on DF, plus a couple of new ones too).

One nice thing I like is people can "like" one another's posts similar to facebook, and there is a Facebook like notification system for PMs, Likes, etc. You can also share pages on facebook and twitter easily.

Closer to the time, we may start to put up a little donation button hopefully asking people to donate a small amount (say the cost of a group class) to help us with the expenses which will be at least few hundred dollars, so hopefully we'll get a little support.

This is pretty much a necessary change, and we either needed to upgrade from vbulletin 3 to 4, or switch to xenforo. Both are similar in level of difficulty, and I just feel xenforo is the right choice. Have a look on Salsa Forums if you like and let me know what you think.

Jive Kick Ball Change (lead or not)

Dance Forums - Wed, 08/22/2012 - 12:05pm
I'm just curious if the majority of ladies do a kick-ball change as a result of the man's lead during non-choreographed routines during competition. I thought it was a stylistic choice, but was told that it can be lead.

I'm a pro/am dancer whose pro doesn't compete with routines - everything is lead/follow. I don't know where I'll find the sensitivity required to feel a kick ball change lead during competition. I can appreciate the ability to follow such a subtle lead, but during competitions, I think it would be better to have routines (at least at the Gold level), so I could develop things more fully and just DANCE! OK. Rant over. :|

ps I can't fix the thread title sp error [moderated by latingal - corrected spelling error in title of thread]

We have just started competing and would love some advice!

Dance Forums - Wed, 08/22/2012 - 1:36am
Hi, it looks like there are some great discussions going on here! My partner and I have taken the plunge and started dancing Latin competitively. We have a lot of fun dancing, and want to get better. We haven't had very good showings at all in the few comps we've done, and are keen to rectify this. I'm just wondering what advice anyone might have? We do a private lesson once a week (our teacher always tell us we're improving lots), and practice another two nights a week - is that not sufficient? Also, are there any good books/DVDs out there which could give us some pointers re technique? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Computer / Network Question--HEEELP!!!

Dance Forums - Tue, 08/21/2012 - 6:58am
I've already posed this question to a friend, but haven't yet heard back, and I figure I may as well crowd-source it too. The more ideas the better, at this point.

A couple of weeks ago I turned Lappy over to a friend; I was having trouble getting iTunes to install, and the long and short of it was that the entire OS needed to be wiped and reinstalled. I got Lappy back, new OS, iTunes working...but when I tried to connect to the intarwebs nothing happened, which I suppose I should have expected since everything had been wiped. OK, fine. So I go downstairs and write down various bits of information from the back of the router, and reconnect Lappy, and voila. Strangely, what I knew was our network password wouldn't work anymore, but a freakin' huge string of letters and numbers seemed to work. Yay.

The strange thing is that after this incident none of our other devices could connect--not Iggy (my iPod), not Strongpad (DH's iPad), not Zola (my phone). Deleting the connection settings and putting them in again with the new huge string of letters as the password worked fine.

Obviously, somehow I ended up resetting the network password to the new long string. Obviously I was there, I did it, but I really never realized that I was resetting the password; I would have thought it would be a bit more obvious that's what was going on. Also, I would have thought it would be stored more at the router level, such that wiping the settings from the laptop wouldn't have affected the network. Or something.

The problem--if you've read this far, thank you, I'm almost done--is that now I can't connect Artemis (work laptop). It sees our network just fine. I put in the key (8 or 9 digits). It never asks me for the network password, so it can't authenticate things. No connection. And I'm having a devil of a time finding the sub-sub-menu where I can put in the new password. Thoughts? Help? (I'm running what I think is Windows 7).

And, more importantly, do you have ideas as to how in hell I can get Artemis (work lappy) to connect? It sees the network. I put in the 8-digit key wossname (and tried it with 9 digits, including the hyphen in the middle), same as with Lappy, but it never asks for the network password...and never connects. Thoughts?

Plea

Dance Forums - Mon, 08/20/2012 - 9:14pm
I have "adopted" a couple of newbie lady Standard dancers. They are on student budgets; therefore, new shoes are basically an impossibility for them. I have found gently used court shoes, in US 7.5. for one of them. For the other, I am in search of US size 10 court shoes. If anyone has a pair available to recycle, please LMK; I'd be very grateful for donations or low, low priced shoes for them.

Thanks.

Buying dance stuff online

Dance Forums - Mon, 08/20/2012 - 5:17pm
Search results aren't loading for me for some reason, so a question - can someone recommend a website which sells good dance shoes (like Supadance or Internationals) and which charges in euros? With EUR-USD exchange rate being much lower these days, it is likely to be less expensive than using dancepsport.uk.com which charges in GBP.

Musicality challenge!

How many different ways can you dance Por la Huella? Lisa? Traspie? 4-1? With the milonga pattern? Maybe even the melody...

Or all of the above depending on the phrase?
