Tips on a Waltz suit

Dance Forums - Mon, 09/03/2012 - 5:31pm
Hello guys,
As I am a novice dancer, I wanted to know some tips on a suit for a Waltz competition. I would like to custom make one rather than order online. The thing is the normal western suit (which I normally wear for weddings) that I have always rises up when I'm in the closed hold posture of the waltz (looks even worse in PP).

I'm mainly complaining about the V shape the suit gives (it rises up when im in the closed hold posture) so any tips/articles on how to stitch a suit so that the V shape and should pads don't rise up making it look bad?

Usadance during National Ballroom Dance Week

Dance Forums - Mon, 09/03/2012 - 5:25pm
With it being National Ballroom Dance Week (Sept. 21-30) the admission to the dances given by two of the Usadance chapters in this state is free, one if you are a member and the other for everyone. Are others doing the same?

This clip covers a lot of ground, and I just posted another link in the Ballroom section. Hoping to get reaction from other sections of the forum regarding their jitterbug, tango, Rhumba, etc. (I'll be scrutinizing their 1943 jitterbug.)

I am checking up on this couple because Joe Lanza, our now departed Black Sheep aka Uncle Joe, received 8 weeks of teacher training at one of their studios in LA circa 1950.

It's remarkable that, according to their daughter, they never had any formal training, but maybe that was not so uncommon in those days.

Foot Change to Shadow Positio in Rumba??

Dance Forums - Sun, 09/02/2012 - 1:09am
The red ISTD book does not have an option for the man to do a foot change in Rumba (like it does for Cha Cha and Samba) to get into Shadow Position where man and lady dance same foot.

I want to know if anyone has a written step or a video that shows any way to get into this position and get back to open or closed position

The reason I am asking is there is a Dancevision Rumba Variations video that (Yulia & Maxim) that have a variation where one can do forward diagonal cucarachas (as well as a variation of a variation including a full turn) but I don't know how to lead my partner into same foot shadow position.

The syllabus only shows shadow position where you do progressive walks forward (kiki walks) [lady and man opposite foot] being preceded by alemana, rope spin, three alemanas, sliding doors, or cuban rock from aida

Any help is appreciated.

Club dance/ college bar dance "etiquette"

Dance Forums - Sat, 09/01/2012 - 7:43pm
Hello,

Ive recently decided to take up club/hip hop/modern dancing lessons so that I can finally learn how to move on the dance floor. Having quit drinking recently, I find that dancing is a perfect alternative to spend your time at a club/bar, instead of nervously sitting at a table gulping down alcohol because your lack of confidence in your dancing ability.

However, I do have one question concerning how to approach women on the dance floor without being creepy.

Since ive never really been that confident on the dancefloor, I usually kind of just go out there and feel really creepy trying to get someone to dance with me.

I dont know how some guys do it. I have friends who know absolutely nothing about dancing except for unskilled "grinding" and they seem to usually go out and find a girl to dance with.

I have even seen guys approach women from behind and grab them to start grinding, which in my opinion is more than just creepy - its forceful.

I understand that women who are out on the dancefloor probably want a guy to dance with, but I still feel kind of creepy just going out there and starting to dance with a complete stranger without so much as a word (talking on the dancefloor is usually not how its done because you can barely hear yourself talk).

So basically, I want to know the "etiquette" of approaching women on the dancefloor and initiating dance with them without being forceful or creeping them out.

Any guys who are successful with this.... can you help me out?

Happy birthday fasc!

Dress care question

Dance Forums - Fri, 08/31/2012 - 8:28pm
So, my first dress with rhinestones arrived today, and I could not be more excited! It fits perfectly and was exactly what I was expecting!
As I tried it on, I noticed 1 or 2 rhinestones fell off. I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions about the best way to care/store/put the dress on/off to minimize this. Should I be worried? Or are they just 1 or 2 rhinestones that might not have been glued all the way and fell of during the long journey from Hong Kong to Iowa?

Anyone know of a loophole where dance lessons can be deducted as a pre-tax expense?

Could this be considered an educational expense?

Question for the guys in the baltimore\DC area. Where\who do you get your latin pants from? I used to order mine from Victoria (don't know her last name), but the last pair of pants she made for me was nothing like what I asked for and makes my knees always look bent.
