Dance Forums - Fri, 09/07/2012 - 8:59pm
I'm going on travel to San Diego next week from Sept 9 'till Sept 15th and am looking for something to do on the evenings. Are there any interesting dance venues or events that you guys could recommend?

International Tango

Dance Forums - Fri, 09/07/2012 - 1:19am
Hi:

I was given a routine to practice and learn for the follower's part for International Tango. One part of my routine goes from a link into an "Open Natural Turn to PP" I have the ballroom technique book, however I do not see any syllabus steps that are entitled as such in the way of an "open natural turn to PP" does anyone know what this is? Or if there is a syllabus equivalent? Timing is supposed to be SQQSS, thanks.:)

Not too happy with my local dancing scene

Dance Forums - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 8:54pm
Please forgive me if I sound like some kind of dancing snob. I really don't mean to be, but let me explain.

My local dancing venue caters to new dancers and beginners who are just there to have fun and that's fine. People need to make their money, but what about people who want to move beyond the beginner/intermediate levels? I have been dancing in the Lindy Hop Swing scene for about six months now and have attended a little over 50 dancing events, 4 exchanges and have entered two Jack & Jill competitions. I take classes every week, but I feel like it's being wasted because at the local venue, the majority (80% or so) don't even know how to do a swingout or even a basic charleston and it's seriously bothering me when all I can do is smile and only do the moves that my partner was taught in the one-hour free lesson that they give before each dance.

And as far as the classes go (the 8-week seesions that are taught by the same instructors who also run the dance events), no one seems to take the classes seriously. They don't go to dancing events to practice what they learned. They don't attend all of the classes for the session and the instructors constantly have to go back to review what was missed. Some drop out of the classes altogether or attend sporadically which causes even more delays.

I know I have only been dancing for six months, but how can someone possibly improve in an environment like this? Whenever I go to a lindy exchange, I feel extremely out-classed by the skill level that's present there. I just recently spent $300 dollars on a DVD set from these two world-class instructors so that I could train and practice alone.

Has anyone else experienced this? Other than moving to a new dancing venue, what would you do in this situation?

Thoughts on standard vs smooth choreography

Dance Forums - Thu, 09/06/2012 - 11:40am
The title might seem strange, since obviously, smooth and standard are very different styles, but my thoughts stem from the basic structure of the dances, when danced at a open level syllabus.

--- Standard ---
1) In standard it is common to have a pattern of moving diagonally into the center to halfway down a wall, and then diagonally to the wall into the corner.
2) Many dancers in standard enjoy going right to the very edge of the floor to show that they can take up as much space as possible. Many competitors even have choreography that is so long that basically they go down the long wall in the center, hit the end of the wall at almost the center of the short wall, then go against line of dance briefly to finishing their long wall into the corner.

??? Smooth ???

Do the poster's with the relavant experience here feel that smooth follows any of the points above for Standard?

1) Do most smooth competitors at an open level follow the "V" shape on a long wall, to move into the center for some fun lines, and then diagonal wall again?

2) Do smooth competitors go right to the edge of the floor? Or do they sort of make their routines a little smaller?

Your ponderings are appreciated :)

I'm in San Diego on vacation for a couple weeks, and I'm wondering if there are any studios/clubs/bars people can recommend where there's good Tango.

Cabeceo

Dance Forums - Wed, 09/05/2012 - 9:48pm
Lately I felt more strongly about gaining skills in Cabeceo.

A few extreme scenarios are:
- I could be dancing none stop without being able to get a dance from the leaders I hope to dance with (for certain music);
- I could be sitting all night avoiding the dancers I don't want to dance with so my eyes stare the floor during cortina;
- I could be patiently sitting at my seat, paying attention to whereabouts of my favorite leaders, but I would see that immediately after they finish a tanda and part with their then partner, another lady is right behind beaming when they turn around.

I am not always in those extreme situations, but I hope that I get to control when and with whom to dance.

the paralympics, in my So. Calif. region are televised on NBCSP Channel 469. I just watched the women's swimming,, WOW, wow, and WOW.
Just awesome stuff, and so glad the commentators are explaining some of the "how come" rules that are going on, on the deck.
I could only wish and dream to swim that fast!

# of days, # of dances at large comp???

Dance Forums - Wed, 09/05/2012 - 6:28pm
Well, bad thread name, could not come up with anything better....

My question is how many of you will travel to a large comp that requires flight and hotel expense for you and pro and not do many entires? Do many/any of you fly in for just a day of competition then leave?

I am (quite excited) to be going to Ohio this year, while only dancing 8 single heats of smooth, scholorship, done...

In large competitions like this is it typical to only attend a small section of the competition...

For me my mind is made up that this is fine and worth the cost for the experience but I sure am curious how everyone else who does not dance multiple styles of dance views it....

You're not as visible as you used to be, but I know you're still here, behind the scenes, making sure that all is right in our little DF world. You are appreciated for all you do!

Happy birthday, SD. And btw, we really need to get on to those USDC organizers, so they move the comp to a time that it doesn't interfere with your birthday celebrations, next year. Clearly, they do not have their priorities straight!

Best wishes, and I hope you get the perfect shot. :-D

Happy Birthday, Purr!

Walter Laird's Technique of Latin Dancing

Dance Forums - Tue, 09/04/2012 - 10:48am
Does anyone have information on Walter Laird's Technique of Latin Dancing book 1972 edition, known as "The Green Book". I am under the impression that it is quite rare. I have been able to find all other editions ranging from 1960's to 2003 readily available on the internet but not this copy. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

ballroombeats web site

Dance Forums - Mon, 09/03/2012 - 6:27pm
I searched and didn't see any threads regarding the ballroombeats web site. Very nice practice and competition music that caters to ballroom and latin. They change the music weekly. You can't download, only stream. Different price plans depending on your needs/desires - plans for students, teachers and studio owners. You can try free for one week.

I don't work for the web site and have nothing to do with them. Just FYI. Google "ballroombeats" and you'll find it.
